National Champions

After four hard fought games the Canes sled team took on the Ohio Warriors for the second time this weekend, to play for the championship. After a scoreless first period, Wolf Hulslander scored what ultimately wound up being the game winner midway through the second period. Steve Fortin shut the door on any potential comeback and sealed the C Division National Championship at the 2016 USA Hockey National Disabled Festival.

Steve Fortin was named tournament MVP after not allowing a goal throughout the five game tournament. Wolf received the Viking Helmet as the player of the game for his hustle and lone goal.

Try Sled

Triangle Special Hockey Association will be hosting a Fall “Try Sled Hockey” Demo event this Saturday at the Raleigh Iceplex. The event will begin at 11:00am and run until 2:00pm. The hope is to continue to grow awareness and recognition for our program, as well as, recruit new players at all age groups. The Try Sled Event is completely free of charge to all those who wish to come out and participate.

We are obviously hopefully to have a large amount of people come out to the event this weekend and try sled hockey for themselves. In saying this, we are not limiting this to only those athletes with mobility impairments. Anyone is free to come and try out this great sport. Athletes with mobility impairments will obviously be given priority over those who are able bodied.

First Practice in the books

The Carolina Sled teams all returned to the ice this weekend for their first official practice of the 2015/2016 season. The practice had 11 adult travel level players, and 4 youth and learn to play skaters. With this representing the first time on the ice since May for most players, the coaching staff kept things simple.

The key word for Sunday was skating, skating, skating, and you guessed it, more skating. For nearly 45 minutes the coaching staff put everyone through a physically demanding skating pace. Most players were able to stick with the high tempo, as they worked on getting back into a conditioning level which will allow them to compete when traveling to national tournaments.

The practice concluded with a 1 on 1 keep away, which eventually turned into a 12 player scrum as the coaches took away pucks at set intervals. At the close of practice the coaching staff reiterated the need for everyone on the team to work hard, not just on the ice, but off the ice as well. The next practice for all levels of sled players will be Sunday, September 20th from 12:00-1:15pm from the Raleigh Iceplex.

End of Season Family Skate/Party and Buffalo Recap

Family Skate/Party

On Sunday April 26, 2015 at 12pm the end of Season TSHA family skate will be held at the Raleigh Ice Plex.  The family skate will be immediately followed by the end of season party.  The skate and party are welcome to participants and participants families.  The event will be catered rather than the usual potluck.

2015 USA Hockey Disabled Festival

The 2015 USA Hockey Disabled Festival held in Buffalo, NY did not go as planned for the Carolina Sled team.  From the first puck drop the team seemed to be out of sync and struggled to create offensive opportunities and at times seems defensively lost.  After the first game the team seemed to settle in and improved their play but having three games in one day, fatigue was a battle the team faced as well.   Although the the tournament was not a success, the team and coaching staff had a great time and gained insight on areas that need work to get this team back to being on top.

The team and coaching staff is looking forward to the 2015 USA Hockey NHL Sled Classic in November.  The team will also be looking to have a full season of full ice practice for the first time.  Having a full sheet of ice will give the team an opportunity to work on true game type situations as well as their skating abilities.

Thanks everyone for a great season.  And a special thanks to all those that made the season possible, without your support none of this would be possible.
